Wilderness First Responder program prepares US Forest Service employees for advanced medical response
In an emergency, a properly trained first responder can make a life-or-death difference. Whether it’s an injured hiker on a remote trail or a wildland firefighter suffering from smoke inhalation, proper medical training is essential.
That’s why the U.S. Forest Service has selected Baker Technical Institute to provide Wilderness First Responder training and certifications for its employees. Employees will receive medical training, leadership, and critical thinking for remote outdoor emergency situations.
“This type of training is ideal for our staff and for those who may be facing a life or death situation on federal land,” says Nathan Goodrich, Zone Fire Management Officer for the U.S. Forest Service. “Whether we are in the mountains, battling a fire or confronted with extreme elements, we want to be prepared to address medical issues.”
A key factor in the Forest Service’s decision to partner with BTI, a leading provider of career technical education programs, was the opportunity to work with instructor Dr. Kaare Tingelstad. A physician who has trained EMS agencies and wilderness guides, Tingelstad also has experience in wild and hostile situations as a paramedic, ski patroller, search and rescue member, and naval officer.
Classes like Wilderness First Responder, offered as part of BTI’s health services career program, advance the skills of a particular workforce. Classes are also aimed at learners interested in pursuing a career in healthcare, or can be customized to train those wanting the skill sets for an adventurous lifestyle.
“Interest in emergency response medical skills in a remote setting continues to be in high demand,” said Doug Dalton, President of BTI. “Future courses are planned in Oregon and around the Pacific Northwest that range from Wilderness First Aid to Wilderness Advanced Life Support.”
