Principles of Agricultural Science - Plant Fast Track July 19-24

Agriculture Business Foundations - BriefCASE July 24

Overview

Principles of Agricultural Science-Plant Science (ASP), Fast Track July 19-24, 2020.

**Fast Track participants must have a prior CASE certification.**

Principles of Agricultural Science—Plant is a foundation-level course teaching students the form and function of plant systems. Students experience various plant science concepts through inquiry-based exercises filled with activities, projects, and problems utilizing laboratory and practical experiences. Student experiences will include the study of plant anatomy and physiology, classification, and the fundamentals of production and harvesting.

Students will learn how to apply scientific knowledge and skills to use plants effectively for agricultural and horticultural production. Students will discover the value of plant production and its impact on the individual, the local, and the global economy.

Lessons throughout the course will provide an overview of the field of agricultural science with a foundation in plant science. These lessons include working in teams and exploring hands-on projects. Students will work on major projects and problems similar to those that plant science specialists, such as horticulturalists, agronomists, greenhouse and nursery managers, and plant research specialists, face in their respective careers.

Teachers are provided detailed professional development to facilitate instruction. Every lesson is aligned with national standards for agriculture, science, mathematics, and English language arts.

Ag Business Foundations BriefCASE (ABF), July 24, 2020 1:00pm-6:00pm

Agricultural Business Foundations (ABF) introduces students to business management in agriculture. Mathematics, reading, and writing components are woven in the context of agriculture and students will use the introductory skills and knowledge developed in this course throughout subsequent CASE courses. Throughout the course are practical and engaging activities, projects, and problems to develop and improve business and employability skills. Additionally, students investigate and develop viable business plans in order to solve local problems. The business plan ideas are communicated to student peers and members of the professional community.

Travel Considerations

The Boise Airport (BOI) is the closest airport to Baker City. Baker City is about a 2-hour drive from Boise.  There is not an airport shuttle, so we recommend getting a rental car or making arrangements to carpool from the airport. If you email ahead of time we can help you get in touch with other participants who may be traveling around the same time.

As you make travel arrangements please note that Boise is in Mountain Time, and Baker City is in Pacific Time. When booking air travel for departure, check-in for the Boise airport is generally expected at least 1.5 hours before departure.  The earliest departure time to avoid missing any scheduled programming is 4:30pm MST (unless you are planning to stay for the Ag Business BriefCASE which will end the evening of July 24).

Once you arrive in Baker City, the hotel is 1.5 miles from the conference location. Daily transportation will need to be arranged with other participants if you are not driving.

Lodging

Lodging will be provided to ASP participants from 7/19 to 7/24, no housing is provided for ABF. All rooms are double occupancy.  If you wish to stay in a single room (dependent on availability) you will be invoiced for the difference.

The hotel information is:

Quality Inn Sunridge Inn and Conference Center

1 Sunridge Ln
Baker City, OR 97814
Phone: 541-523-6444

Course Credit

Graduate credits from Oregon State University will be offered to all participants of the BTI CASE Institutes.  Please contact Dr. Josh Stewart for details on obtaining graduate credit (josh.stewart@oregonstate.edu).

Cancellation Policy

Individuals who wish to cancel their registration after registering for the institute will incur a cancellation fee.  Any registration cancellation made after May 1 will incur a cancellation fee ($500 for ASP, $50 for ABF). After June 1, no refunds will be available to the individual and/or their school and payment in full is required. No reimbursements will be given for no-shows.

Area Activities

Eastern Oregon is a gorgeous place for outdoor activities! Baker City is located at the base of the Elkhorn Mountains, with a gorgeous view of both the Elkhorns and the Wallowa Mountains. There are many things to do after class. The Powder River runs through the center of town, alongside is a scenic walkway. Downtown has over 100 historic buildings, along with excellent restaurants and local shops. Some after-hours activities will be offered, but none are required.

There are many things to do right in our backyard! Anthony Lakes Mountain Resort, Sumpter Valley, and other areas on the Elkhorn Mountains offer summer outdoor activities, rentals, fishing, hiking, historic train rides, gold mines, golfing, and live music! We are about an hour drive to the Snake River, the Oregon Trail and Hells Canyon. You can even take a trip to Joseph, Oregon which is famous for the Wallowa Lake and the Swiss-style tram ride up the mountains. In the summer it stays light until 9:30pm so there will be plenty of daylight left after class is complete each day.
